Do you still remember what it feels like to receive a handwritten letter?
Based on Dory Cheng’s zine Developing Film in Your Mind, this workshop invites participants to gather and collage their own fragmented thoughts and fleeting memories, “developing” the faded filmstrips of their mind into vivid imagery through textual annotation. Developing Film in Your Mind condenses stories and scenes from Cheng’s month-and-a-half-long solo travels in Europe. Ten letters containing ten stories document her experiences in the cities where she wandered and resided. Taking the most memorable images, scenes, feelings, and thoughts, the zine allows readers to recreate these faded images in their own minds. Co-organised with Cheng, this workshop explores how zines can transform everyday recollections into creative materials.
This workshop is part of the exhibition Countering Time, which explores whether historical events and art history have definitive beginnings and endings, as well as how artists can counter strict chronologies.
